Olympics? Sorry I'm a football man!

January 28th.

A date that could well be a turning point in the history of our beloved club. If you didn't know that is the date that The Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC) will recommend who is the most suitable for the Olympic Stadium - this obviously being between ourselves and The Spammers down the road.

The Olympic Stadium itself is fantastic, have been past it on a number of occasions (ironically on my way to Spurs) and it is pretty impressive! The transport links would be fantastic and it would cost a significant amount less compared with The Northumberland Development Project.
The potential is also there for a much greater capacity stadium than we would get at White Hart Lane, this would be a fantastic thing for the fans as it means many more of us could see our team every week. It would probably see the end of our enormous season ticket waiting list as well! (at least for the time being anyway!)

Despite all this though, am am hugely against this idea.

When the first pictures emerged of  the NDP I practically orgasmed, yes that's right I immediately had to change my pants! Here was our chance to get onto the world stage with a world class stadium that the club so badly deserves, not only that but it looked the nuts as well!

There were talks of us moving out of North London a long time ago - when the first thoughts of a new stadium were being passed about there was speculation that we could move out of London because of space/financial issues. There was a collective sigh of relief when the NDP was unveiled as not only was it impressive (and thoroughly outshone The Emirates) but it confirmed the clubs desire to not only stay in North London but Tottenham itself.

And this is what its all about. Tottenham. We are Tottenham Hotspur at the end of the day and could we really keep that name if we moved to Stratford? Could you really cheer on a team called Stratford Hotspur? I know I couldn't! Despite this hypothetical club having the same colours, the same badge, the same players and staff it would be called Stratford Hotspur. I for one couldn't sing that at games - it would be like supporting a different team.

"But what if they keep the Tottenham Hotspur name?" I hear you say. That would be good but we would be moving into East London. I'll get this straight, I don't care about 'moving onto Spam territory', in fact it would be quite funny to piss them off. However that wouldn't last long at all.
Imagine walking to games through the area, trouble would be rife for a start as there would be a horde of angry fans wearing claret and blue lingering around the stadium almost continuously; Not only that but I can guarantee that the stadium would get regularly vandalised.

Quite frankly I don't blame them for getting pissed off at the potential of us moving there. When the filth first moved onto our patch in 1913 I don't suppose it went down well but there wasn't really a rivalry between the two teams at the time - this developed after the move. However imagine this happening to us now - I would be less than pleased!

Tottenham is where our club has been since its inception and we've been at the White Hart Lane site since 1899 - do we really want to throw away nearly 130 years of history?
I applaud Daniel Levy and the Tottenham board for looking into every alternative, it shows good management. This however is one area they should bite the bullet and accept the increased cost - culture and heritage is something you cant just bin.

After all - look what happened to Wimbledon after their move (not the same distance I realise but still relevant).

This is also the subject of this week's poll which is located on the left sidebar!
